“One, two, three, and four” she proclaims softly, tapping the top of her teeth with a small finger. “Mommy!  I have 22 because I’m missing these two, see?”  This scene is being played out all over the United States.  It’s both a time of extreme happiness for parents, and a not-so-friendly reminder that if they want to keep their children smiling, they will need to go without for a few months.  This is a dilemma faced throughout the nation by underprivileged and immigrant families who want to make sure their children have the best start in life. Another summer has come and gone leaving in its wake fond memories of beautiful weather, beach days, and schedules that were open. With school upon students once again and the workload of classes bearing down, many things that were once valued this summer, sleeping 12 hours a day,  just don’t get the time of day anymore. While school and homework should be a priority in students’ lives right now, there are other things that time should be made for, namely, working out. Some thoughts that may be occurring now may be, “Exercise? Ain’t nobody got time for that”, or the, “I want to but I hate getting sweaty” crap. Continue reading

The troubles facing homeless youth made headlines this summer when Miley Cyrus’ date to MTV’s Video Music Awards was Jesse Helt, a 22-year-old homeless man from Oregon.  Cyrus faced backlash when the media disclosed that Helt had outstanding warrants. In the face of criticism, Cyrus tweeted, “Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?” Continue reading

A culture festival is an annual event held by most schools in Japan to showcase students work.
